VTM (vintage-to-modern) Quill Stem

Meet our vintage-to-modern missing link. As much as we love modern metal bikes, we can’t deny all of the great vintage frames out there that would be a blast to ride with modern components. The sticking point for a refresh of an old frame with new parts is the quill stem. Vintage handlebars are a smaller diameter (26.0mm) so you can’t simply load a modern bar (31.8mm) into your old stem.  You could go with a quill to threadless conversion, but aesthetically it’s less than desirable (and not ok for L’Eroica).

We have a solution. Meet our Caletti VTM (vintage-to-modern) Quill Stem. We are offering our very limited run of handmade, tig-welded steel, 1″ quill stems with a modern 31.8mm bar clamp. Your vintage frame, our quill stem and a modern build kit equals vintage made modern in style. Now you can run a safe modern bar on your old school steel whip.

Each stem has been handcrafted here in the workshop, using 4130 cromoly tubing, aluminum top caps and wedges machined in Portland, with titanium quill bolts that we have anodized in Caletti Blue. Bar clamp is 31.8mm and the quill is 22.2mm for 1″ threaded forks. They have been painted luscious gloss black by Ollie at Dark Matter Finishing and we made a special decal with a nod to our favorite old school stem maker. I made 18 stems total, two have already been pre-sold. They feature a -17 degree rise with extension options of 90mm, 100mm, 110mm and 120mm.

Special Offer

Stems purchased now through the end of November will include a t-shirt with matching logo, as well as a roll of Caletti printed bar tape in either white or black. Shirts are available in Women’s and Men’s sizes (they run on the smaller side, so if you are in between sizes, go up one).

I hope this project helps to get your cool vintage steel bike back on the road with a safe and comfortable handlebar; perhaps to enjoy the Eroica ride this spring.
