CALETTI X KILLE

ARTIST EDITION ROAD RACE SPECIAL

Let Me Tell You About This Bike

On February 27, 2016 our Caletti x Kille collaboration Road Race Special was awarded the Best Finish award at the North American Handmade Bicycle Show. We are excited to share our video about the project along with some other images and details.

Background

After a long time of tossing ideas around, my friend Jeremiah Kille and I found an opportunity in the North American Handmade Bicycle Show to do a collaborative project of a handmade road race style bike with a very unique hand painted finish design. Soon after I was talking about our plan with a friend, Sean, who jumped on it and wanted to get the bike we would make. Sean was the perfect customer to get this bike, he digs Jeremiah’s art and had been looking to get one of my bikes for a while. Sean’s got a real appreciation for nice handmade bikes, not just for their good looks, but for the ride and durability as well. He rides a ton and is really passionate about cycling. So I worked with Sean to get the design and geometry of the bike right for him, as well as great parts selection to compliment the bike and suit his needs. Once I had finished making the frame, we had Spectrum Powder Works coat the steel frame white and liquid paint the carbon fork and stem to match. We then handed this off to Jeremiah along with Giro helmet and shoes and a slingshot I made out of some of the tubing cut-offs from making the bike. Jeremiah then worked his magic hand painting patterns, details, graphics, a whale, squid, pelican, crab, seastar and more in black onto the white parts.

The Frame & Build Kit

The frame is our Road Race Special model—an aggressive design built with light and stiff steel tubing. Strategic tubing selection keeps the weight low, responsiveness high, while retaining durability and a lively road feel. The build kit includes an ENVE Composites cockpit with a mix of Campagnolo Record and Super Record parts.

Road Race Special frame features:

  • True Temper OX Platinum lightweight head tube
  • True Temper S3 tear drop top tube and 38mm bi-oval down tube
  • Columbus Life triple butted oversize seat tube
  • Columbus Life high volume short taper chainstays
  • True Temper smaller diameter tapered seat stays, with our own custom S bend
  • Paragon Macine Works threaded BB and compact dropouts with replaceable hanger
  • Stainless steel bottle bosses and cable stops
  • ENVE 2.0 fork
  • Chris King headset

That Paint

Our good friend and local Santa Cruz artist, Jeremiah Kille deserves the credit for the amazing finish. After the frame received a white base coat with black logos from Spectrum Powderworks, Jeremiah went to work with traditional brush and One Shot sign paint. He anticipated spending 20 hours painting the frame. After painting the stem for about 6 hours, he realized his estimate was way off. In the end Jeremiah said the project took over 60 hours to complete. His dedication and passion for the project shine in the final product.

Details, Details

The project extended beyond just the frame. Jeremiah also painted a Giro Synthe helmet and Empire shoes and custom Caletti Cycles slingshot to match. To round out the bike finish we produced a short run of custom printed handle bar tape by Zevlin, which is available in our web shop.
